President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for their unanimous support of the four Tax Reform Bills currently under review by the National Assembly, describing their collaboration as a bold step towards national development.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President lauded the governors for their leadership and commitment to fostering unity across regional, ethnic, and political divides to advance Nigeria’s economic growth.
He highlighted the productive consultation between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform, held on Thursday, as a model of cooperation between federal and state governments.
President Tinubu extended special recognition to Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the NGF, for rallying his colleagues to support the transformative tax reforms.
He also acknowledged the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other groups for resolving disputes surrounding the proposed bills through bipartisan efforts.
The President emphasised that the Tax Reform Bills aim to improve Nigeria’s economic competitiveness and attract investments while maintaining a pro-poor stance.
He noted that modernising the country’s outdated tax laws is crucial for driving national interests and creating a more favourable investment climate.
“The primary objective of these reforms is to promote national interests, improve our economy’s competitiveness, and attract both local and foreign investments,” President Tinubu stated, urging the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process to enable Nigerians to benefit from the reforms without delay.
The President also underscored the importance of constructive dialogue in addressing concerns, citing the NGF’s engagement with the Presidential Committee as a prime example.
He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the governors to foster economic growth, peace, and stability across the nation.
Finally, President Tinubu encouraged other stakeholders with suggestions for refining the Tax Bills to engage with the ongoing legislative process, emphasising the need for collaboration to achieve impactful reforms.
