President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the tragic fuel tanker explosion that claimed more than 80 lives and left many others injured at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State.
The devastating incident occurred on Saturday, leaving families and the state in mourning.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the government and people of Niger State.
He lamented the tragic and preventable nature of the explosion, as many casualties resulted from individuals attempting to scoop Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the overturned tanker.
President Tinubu directed immediate medical attention for the injured and tasked security and road safety agencies to enforce measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Recognising the hazardous nature of such situations, he urged Nigerians to exercise caution and avoid accident sites involving fuel-laden vehicles.
As part of his response, the President instructed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to embark on a nationwide public awareness campaign.
This initiative aims to educate citizens about the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers and the environmental risks associated with such actions.
