Police confirm hospitalisation of Anthony Joshua after Ogun road accident

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that Nigeria-born British former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been hospitalised following a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident reportedly occurred on Monday in the Makun area of the expressway, a busy commercial corridor within the state.

According to the police, the vehicle conveying Joshua was involved in a collision near the Sinoma area, before Danco, under circumstances that are still being investigated.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said Joshua and other injured occupants of the vehicle were immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

“The Ogun State Police Command confirms a road accident today in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Anthony Joshua and other injured persons have been rushed to the hospital. Further updates will be communicated,” the police spokesperson said.

Sources told Nigerian Monitor that two persons travelling in the same vehicle with the boxing star died on the spot as a result of the crash.

Joshua was said to have sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

It was further gathered that the vehicle reportedly collided with another car, although details surrounding the cause of the accident remain unclear as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked widespread reactions, with fans and supporters flooding social media platforms with messages of concern and goodwill for the former heavyweight champion.

Authorities have assured the public that more information will be made available as investigations progress.
