A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday in the Oke-Ala community of Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, after a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was fatally stabbed by a mentally unstable youth whom he was attempting to restrain.

The attack occurred when the suspect’s mother reportedly sought help from two NSCDC operatives to manage her son, who residents said had battled mental instability for years and had recently become a threat to the peace of the neighbourhood.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the situation escalated abruptly as the operatives tried to restrain the young man with chains to stop him from further disturbing the community.

In the struggle, the suspect allegedly overpowered one of the officers, seized his knife, and stabbed him repeatedly.

“The boy suddenly became violent. He struggled with the officer, took his knife, and stabbed him several times,” an eyewitness who requested anonymity told reporters. “It was shocking because the officer was even armed, yet he could not prevent the attack.”

The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead from the injuries sustained during the assault.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Ondo State, DSC Daniel Aidamenbor, described the development as deeply tragic.

He explained that the operatives were attempting to restrain the suspect with the intention of taking him to a psychiatric facility for proper medical care when the deadly confrontation occurred.

Aidamenbor stated that the officers acted in the interest of both the disturbed youth and the residents, stressing that the corps was saddened by the loss of its personnel.
