The newly deployed Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Adebowale Lawal, on Monday officially assumed duty, pledging to build on the achievements of his predecessor while forging stronger collaborations with all stakeholders to enhance security across the state.

Speaking during the formal handover ceremony at the state police command headquarters, Lawal expressed deep appreciation to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for entrusting him with the leadership of the command.

He described the posting as a significant responsibility and assured residents of his determination to protect lives and property with renewed vigour.

“I’ve seen this command as a very big shoe to step into, but I’m confident that with the support of the management team, the good people of Ondo State, and of course the press, we will succeed,” he said.

The new police chief made a strong appeal for cooperation from sister security agencies and community stakeholders, stressing that security is a collective responsibility that cannot rest solely on the shoulders of the police.

He urged agencies such as the military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, and non-state actors to extend the same level of support his predecessor enjoyed, if not more.

Issuing a warning to criminals and miscreants, Lawal made it clear that there would be zero tolerance for crime under his watch.

“I want to assure everybody that I will live up to expectations. All I ask is the support of everyone. We will re-strategise where necessary, and ensure that Ondo State remains unsafe for criminals,” he vowed.

In his farewell address, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, reflected on his tenure, which he described as impactful, marked by significant reductions in crime.

“In the past month alone, we recorded no case of kidnapping and only one murder case,” Afolabi noted, attributing the successes to targeted crime prevention strategies and the dedication of officers.

He spoke glowingly of his successor, describing Lawal as a highly competent officer with an impressive blend of academic and operational credentials.

“I prayed for the new CP before coming here today. He’s competent, and I believe he will take this command to greater heights,” Afolabi said, while urging officers and stakeholders to give the new commissioner unwavering support.

The handover follows the June 29 redeployment of CP Afolabi by the Inspector General of Police.
