Newly redeployed Commissioner of Police for Ondo State, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has refuted claims linking his transfer from the state to a recent protest by the “Take It Back” movement, describing the report by online platform Sahara Reporters as “false, unprofessional and malicious.”
The embattled senior police officer said the report was not only misleading but deliberately crafted to distort facts and sow unnecessary discord.
He stated categorically that his redeployment had no connection whatsoever with the peaceful protest referenced in the publication.
According to him, the protest was handled professionally and even earned commendations from both the police high command and the public.
Afolabi, a Police Staff College (Psc+) graduate and member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Safety (mnips), dismissed the claims as the handiwork of “armchair journalism,” while maintaining that transfers and postings are routine in the Nigeria Police Force. “Every appointment or redeployment comes from God,” he said. “If it was not divinely sanctioned, I would not have had the privilege to serve in that capacity.”
Afolabi stressed his enduring commitment to professionalism, discipline, and service to the nation, noting that during a recent command briefing, he had urged officers to embrace integrity, good ethics, and a strong sense of duty.
Rather than viewing his transfer with regret, the Commissioner highlighted several accomplishments during his tenure in Ondo, including the arrest and prosecution of over 30 confirmed kidnappers, the dismantling of 83 cult gangs, and the apprehension of several armed robbers and car snatchers.
He noted that he remained active and dutiful even after receiving his redeployment notice on Thursday, counselling officers under his command to remain unfazed and professional in the face of routine postings.
In a further show of maturity, Afolabi said he personally contacted his successor, congratulated him, and scheduled the official handover for Monday, June 30, to ensure a seamless transition.
Reaffirming his faith in God and his loyalty to the values of the Nigeria Police Force, Afolabi urged the public to disregard the false report and continue to support efforts at maintaining law and order.
“I remain committed to serving with honour, integrity, and the fear of God,” he concluded.
