President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka A. Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security framework and intelligence coordination.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam.

According to the statement, the appointment reflects the administration’s determination to enhance intelligence-driven operations, deepen inter-agency collaboration and improve responses to emerging security threats across the country.

The circular conveying the appointment was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

Major General Fadewa, a highly decorated retired military officer, is said to possess over three decades of experience in military intelligence, national security strategy, counter-terrorism operations and international security diplomacy.

The Presidency noted that his career has been marked by operational excellence and strategic leadership in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national interests.

The statement highlighted his role as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021, where he reportedly played a major role in developing Nigeria’s intelligence coordination structure.

During his tenure, he spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre at ONSA, an integrated multi-agency platform designed to improve intelligence sharing and strategic coordination among key security agencies, including the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces.

Following his retirement from active service, Fadewa served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, where he contributed to research and policy discussions on policing, civil-security cooperation and national security reforms.

He is also the author of the monograph, “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which outlines practical approaches for strengthening collaboration between civil institutions and security agencies.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the retired general’s appointment would further strengthen ongoing efforts to achieve a safer and more secure Nigeria through improved intelligence integration, homeland security coordination and proactive risk management.

The President also urged the new adviser to deploy his experience and strategic expertise in advancing national security objectives in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
