The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for the immediate suspension of the planned Local Government elections in Osun State, citing credible intelligence reports indicating a high risk of violence and security threats.
According to a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the elections, if allowed to proceed, could lead to unrest, disrupt public peace, and endanger lives and property.
NPF said intelligence gathered from joint security assessments suggests that various political groups and interest parties are mobilising to instigate violence, posing a serious threat to democratic stability.
Given this volatile situation, the police have advised the Osun State Government to halt the elections to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order.
While security agencies remain prepared to take decisive action if necessary, the NPF emphasised that suspending the elections is the most prudent course of action to avoid unnecessary confrontation and ensure public safety.
In addition to security concerns, the police also highlighted legal complexities surrounding the elections.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, recently clarified the legal position regarding Local Government administration in Osun State, referencing a Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, 2025.
The judgment is said to have nullified a previous decision by the Federal High Court, further calling into question the legitimacy of the planned elections.
Given the combination of security risks and legal uncertainties, the NPF has urged the Osun State Government and all stakeholders to prioritise peace and stability by suspending the elections.
The police also called on political parties and the public to exercise restraint and act in the best interest of the state’s residents during this critical period.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives, maintaining order, and upholding the rule of law, the NPF assured citizens that it would continue working closely with other security agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic processes.
