Just 48 hours before the Ondo State governorship election, three opposition candidates have withdrawn from the race, throwing their support behind Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The candidates from the Accord Party, the National Rescue Movement (NRM), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced their decision during a solidarity visit to the governor.
Dr. Ajibola Falaye of the Accord Party spoke on behalf of the three parties, commending Governor Aiyedatiwa’s achievements and commitment to Ondo State’s progress.
Joining Falaye in the endorsement were Hon. Jenyo Ataunoko, the NRM candidate, and Mr. Olaide Rasheed Ibrahim, deputy governorship candidate of the ADC.
The ADC’s governorship candidate had previously voiced support for Aiyedatiwa.
Explaining the decision, Dr. Falaye praised Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to public service and his open-door approach to leadership.
“We have observed his inclusive governance style and his commitment to residents’ welfare,” Falaye noted, highlighting the governor’s success in maintaining relative peace across the state.
“The state has experienced peace under his watch, reflecting his dedication to safeguarding lives,” he added.
Falaye also emphasised the shared values and progressive goals that connect the NRM, ADC, and Accord Party with Aiyedatiwa’s administration, specifically acknowledging the strides in infrastructure and development achieved during Aiyedatiwa’s tenure.
“This Saturday, we will turn our commitment into votes for continuity in Ondo State,” he stated.
Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed deep appreciation for the endorsement, describing it as a show of statesmanship and goodwill.
“I didn’t call for this, but I am grateful my colleagues in the race have voluntarily aligned with my mandate and pledged to mobilise their supporters for the APC,” he said.
With election day drawing near, Aiyedatiwa urged supporters to make a strong showing at the polls.
“There’s no time left. I appeal to you all to rally your members to come out in full force on Saturday and vote APC,” he added.
Governor Aiyedatiwa was joined by Benue State Governor Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia and campaign Director General Hon. Abiola Makinde in welcoming the three candidates’ endorsement, a move that further unites the APC ahead of the crucial election.
