Governor Aiyedatiwa marks 60th birthday with acts of clemency, releases 40 prisoners

By Our Reporter

In a heartfelt gesture to commemorate his 60th birthday, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 40 prisoners, demonstrating a deep commitment to rehabilitation and the principles of justice with compassion. This decision, which aligns with his administration’s justice reform agenda, highlights the governor’s belief in second chances and the transformative power of mercy.

The release was based on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, reflecting a justice system focused on reform rather than retribution. Of the 40 beneficiaries, 15 inmates will be granted outright release starting 12 January 2025. Additionally, several death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while others have received reduced sentences, paving the way for reintegration into society.

The announcement was made by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. He described the governor’s decision as a significant act of grace, symbolically signed on the governor’s milestone birthday.

“This compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to extending grace and mercy to deserving individuals, which is a vital component of his administration’s ongoing justice sector reforms,” Dr. Ajulo stated. He added that the council’s deliberations considered factors such as the nature of the offences, the duration of incarceration, the age and health of the inmates, and their behaviour while in custody.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s act of mercy is grounded in Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). However, the governor chose not to hold personal celebrations in light of the recent passing of the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who died last weekend. This decision further reflects his solemn and reflective approach to leadership and governance.

The gesture, which symbolises hope and a second chance for those who have shown the capacity for change, is a hallmark of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration, committed to reforming the justice system while fostering compassion and inclusivity in governance.
