The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in the country.

In a notice released through its official website and social media platforms, the embassy advised U.S. citizens in Nigeria to exercise heightened caution when visiting American diplomatic premises and institutions linked to the United States.

The alert specifically mentioned the U.S. Embassy Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos.

Titled “Threat to U.S. Facilities and Schools,” the notice stated that American authorities had received information indicating a potential threat against U.S. facilities and schools affiliated with the United States in Nigeria.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice said.

“The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when travelling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated schools, including varying times and routes.”

The embassy urged American citizens to increase awareness of their surroundings, avoid predictable routines, and review general security precautions with their families.

It also outlined several precautionary measures for U.S. nationals residing in or visiting Nigeria.

Among the recommended actions were staying alert in public places, avoiding large crowds and demonstrations, maintaining a low profile, and keeping mobile phones charged for emergencies.

The notice further advised citizens to review their personal security plans, vary their regular travel routes, and familiarise themselves with emergency exits when entering public buildings.

Despite the alert, the embassy noted that the consular sections of the diplomatic missions in Abuja and Lagos remain open.

It encouraged citizens to continue monitoring official channels for updates and additional information regarding the situation.
