President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s globally acclaimed literary icon and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on the occasion of his 91st birthday, describing him as a national treasure and a boundless source of inspiration to Nigerians and the world.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extolled Soyinka’s contributions to literature, human rights, education, and cultural diplomacy, calling him an “uncommon patriot” whose creative brilliance and moral courage have inspired generations.

“Professor Soyinka is an extraordinary force — a decorated writer, public intellectual, activist, and cultural icon whose lifetime of work has deeply enriched our national consciousness,” the President said.

President Tinubu acknowledged his personal and professional ties with the Nobel Laureate, highlighting their long-standing association and shared efforts in advancing Nigeria’s progress through democratic engagement and public service.

“I rejoice with Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on reaching another year and praise his continuing service and contributions to our nation’s development.

“Even at the grand old age, he continues to be a source of inspiration to fellow citizens and people around the world. We are grateful for his long years of service to Nigeria and humanity,” Tinubu said.

Soyinka, who in 1986 became the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, is celebrated for his vast body of work spanning drama, poetry, essays, and memoirs — works that have earned him acclaim as one of the world’s most compelling and courageous voices in literature and social commentary.

Marking what the President described as “the beginning of the journey into the last decade of his centennial,” Tinubu wished the literary titan good health, strength, and more fruitful years in sound mind.

Soyinka’s birthday, celebrated annually on July 13, continues to resonate widely, with tributes pouring in from writers, artists, scholars, and political leaders across the globe.
