President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a N15 billion take-off grant to support its immediate development.

The approval, announced on Monday in a State House statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the existing academy into multiple campuses across the country.

The Nigeria Police Academy, currently located in Wudil, Kano state, is expected to benefit from the expansion as part of efforts to strengthen training capacity and meet the evolving needs of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the statement, the N15 billion intervention fund will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and will be deployed to finance critical infrastructure, including academic facilities, student hostels, and essential training equipment for the new campus.

The decision followed a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The meeting reportedly evaluated factors such as projected student intake capacity, funding sustainability, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower requirements of the police, particularly in view of ongoing recruitment efforts nationwide.

President Tinubu, according to the statement, believes that the expansion of the academy will enhance institutional governance, deepen professional training, and promote modern policing standards in Nigeria.
