Nigeria’s media industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, at the age of 56.
Oladipo reportedly took ill suddenly at his office in Lagos on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, and died hours later after being taken to a hospital.
Reports said he had been in his usual state of health earlier in the day before the sudden illness.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday night by the President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Danlami Nmodu, on the guild’s WhatsApp platform.
Nmodu, who described Oladipo as an Emeritus President of GOCOP, wrote: “It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
The circumstances surrounding the sudden illness had not been fully disclosed as of Wednesday, while details of the burial arrangements were also yet to be announced.
Oladipo’s death has sparked widespread grief among journalists, media executives, publishers and other stakeholders, who have continued to pay tribute to a practitioner whose career spanned almost three decades and cut across traditional newspaper journalism and digital publishing.
Oladipo was the founder and Managing Editor of The Eagle Online and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited.
Before establishing the online newspaper, he built considerable experience in the traditional media, working with some of Nigeria’s prominent newspaper organisations.
He worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor. His transition from the conventional newsroom to online publishing placed him among journalists who helped shape Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital media space.
Through The Eagle Online, Oladipo remained active in political and public affairs reporting, commentary and analysis. His publication became one of the recognised platforms in Nigeria’s online news ecosystem.
His professional career also extended beyond the newsroom. He was the pioneer President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), an organisation established to promote cooperation and professional development among media practitioners.
GOCOP mourns former president
Oladipo was a prominent figure in the development of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, serving as its President from 2017 to 2021.
The Guild said his tenure came at a critical period when online publishing was evolving rapidly and publishers were seeking to establish a stronger professional identity and collaborative platform.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Kemi Yesufu, GOCOP described his death as a loss to the Guild and the wider Nigerian media community.
The Guild said Oladipo brought extensive traditional media experience into online publishing and was among the publishers who recognised the need for online publishers to unite, exchange ideas and build a stronger professional community.
It added that he devoted considerable time to the affairs of the Guild during his tenure as President and represented the organisation at different engagements as the online publishing industry confronted the opportunities and challenges associated with its rapid growth.
Nmodu, while paying tribute to his predecessor, said Oladipo played an important role in the development of GOCOP and that his contribution would remain remembered.
The Guild’s leadership said his death was particularly painful coming at a time when he remained actively involved in the media industry.
IMPCMS mourns leader
The Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society also mourned Oladipo, describing his death as a devastating loss to the organisation and Nigerian journalism.
Its General Secretary, Nkanu Egbe, announced the death on Wednesday morning, saying Oladipo had led the cooperative with dedication while simultaneously maintaining a distinguished journalism career spanning nearly three decades.
Egbe said the organisation would communicate further details concerning funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership matters as they become available.
Oladipo had emerged President of the IMPCMS in 2024, having previously served as a prominent figure in the media cooperative’s formation and development.
