President Bola Tinubu has assured labour leaders that his administration is committed to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, including a realistic minimum wage.

Meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) leadership in Abuja on Thursday, the President emphasized the importance of happy and productive workers to the nation’s growth.

While acknowledging the need for an upward adjustment to the minimum wage, President Tinubu called for realistic expectations, considering the country’s economic dynamics.

He suggested a more flexible approach to wage adjustments, rather than the traditional five-year cycle.

Labour leaders, Comrade Joe Ajaero (NLC) and Comrade Festus Osifo (TUC), highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerian workers, including inflation and high transportation costs.

They commended the President on the Supreme Court’s judgement granting financial autonomy to local governments and expressed optimism about the potential impact on Nigeria’s progress.

The meeting adjourned for further consultations with stakeholders, signaling a continued dialogue between the government and labour leaders to address workers’ concerns and find a mutually beneficial solution.
