Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has made a passionate plea for peace following violent clashes between youths from Oka Odo, Ebo, and Owake communities in Iwaro, which have claimed two lives and left several others injured.
The unrest, which erupted on 12 January 2025, has also led to significant property damage, including incidents of arson.
According to reports, the conflict began when youths from Oka Odo embarked on a hunting expedition but were allegedly attacked by youths from Ebo, who reportedly mistook them for individuals from Owake.
The Ebo youths’ actions were linked to a lingering land dispute with the Owake community.
In retaliation, Oka Odo youths launched an assault on the Ebo community, escalating the violence.
The clashes resulted in the tragic loss of two lives, with the identities of the deceased yet to be confirmed.
Several injured victims are currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.
In response to the crisis, CP Afolabi deployed a police team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Operations), to the affected areas to restore order and prevent further escalation.
The Commissioner has assured residents that those responsible for the violence will be brought to justice, regardless of their affiliations.
In his statement, CP Afolabi implored all parties involved to sheath their swords and prioritise peaceful dialogue as a means of resolving disputes.
“Violence and the destruction of property will only lead to stagnation and underdevelopment,” he emphasised.
The Ondo State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all residents in the troubled communities.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner has urged community leaders to engage in dialogue to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.
