At the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Owerri, Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodinma underscored the vital role of a strong local press in holding leaders accountable.
The governor reaffirmed his support for an independent press, which he described as fundamental to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
While highlighting the media’s responsibility to scrutinise leadership, he also emphasised the need for accuracy, truthfulness, and ethical reporting in journalism.
Governor Uzodinma acknowledged the growing challenges facing the media, including the proliferation of social media, fake news, and disinformation.
As a solution, he advocated for media literacy, fact-checking, and responsible journalism practices.
To promote professionalism, he pointed to his administration’s initiative in Imo State, which includes an award of excellence for journalists who demonstrate integrity in their reportage.
He urged the NUJ leadership to safeguard the profession’s integrity by addressing disinformation and reinforcing ethical standards.
The conference also featured a lecture delivered by Dr Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), who called for greater investment in the professional development of journalists.
Represented by Professor Okey Ikechukwu, mni, Dr Neliaku stressed the importance of capacity-building by media owners to discourage unethical practices.
He also urged the media to ensure fair remuneration for their colleagues, particularly during public engagements, and recommended integrating media literacy, curriculum development, and ethical reporting into the profession’s framework to enhance its credibility.
With the theme “Media and Democracy: The Journalist’s Role in Holding Leaders Accountable,” the conference has attracted widespread participation.
NUJ President Chris Isiguzo announced the accreditation of 602 delegates from across Nigeria, highlighting the event as a critical platform for addressing the challenges facing journalism and shaping its future direction in the country.
