Alhassan Yaya has emerged as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) following a decisive victory at the union’s Triennial Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday.
Yaya secured 436 votes out of a total of 592 cast, surpassing his closest rival, Dele Atunbi, who polled 97 votes, and Garba Mohammed, who garnered 39 votes.
The election also recorded one void vote.
Announcing the results, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President represented by Imo NLC Chairman, presided over the session and declared the results.
He declared that Yaya had fulfilled all constitutional requirements and was therefore duly elected.
“Having satisfied all requirements of the Constitution, Alhassan Yaya is hereby declared the winner of the election and returned elected,” Ikeogwu stated.
The NLC Chairman was assisted by the Chairman of the NUJ Electoral Committee, Mr Mike Ikeogwu, and members of his team,
The election marked the culmination of activities at the conference, where delegates from across the country convened to decide the leadership of the union for the next three years.
Yaya’s victory is seen as a mandate for continuity and reform within the NUJ as the organisation faces evolving challenges in the media landscape.
