From John Dike, Osogbo
The Lowa Adimula of Ile-Ife, High Chief Abraham Adekola Adeyeye, has advocated for the use of traditional deities to administer oaths of office to political leaders.
He believes this will effectively tackle corruption and corrupt practices among political office holders.
Speaking to newsmen at his traditional home in Ile-Ife, Osun State, the monarch emphasized that politicians should be accountable to the people who elected them.
He suggested that using traditional deities like “Sango” to administer oaths would reduce the rate of stealing public funds and address corruption.
The monarch also called for a constitution review, urging the federal government to recognize the role of traditional institutions in Nigeria. He expressed concern that the current constitution does not give due recognition and respect to traditional institutions.
Additionally, he appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to look into the development needs of Ile-Ife, the home of Yoruba land, and to work with the Ooni of Ife to bring more development to the area.
The monarch commended Governor Ademola Adeleke’s efforts in infrastructure development in Osun State and hailed the autonomy granted to local governments by the supreme court. He urged electorates to vote out non-performing leaders and shun money inducement during voting exercises.
Regarding the ongoing hunger protests, the traditional chief attributed the hike in transportation costs to the difficulty in fixing market prices for commodities.
