In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on parents and promoting access to quality education, Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved the payment of N633.9 million to cover West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration fees for 23,048 public secondary school students in the state.

The approval, granted on Friday, 28 February 2025, ensures that students who successfully passed the Joint Senior Secondary School II Promotion Examination conducted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology will have their examination fees fully covered by the government.

Over the years, the Ondo State Government has consistently funded WAEC registration fees for public school students, providing much-needed relief for parents and guardians, particularly in light of economic challenges.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Aiyedatiwa, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, said in a press statement that this initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to education, allowing all eligible candidates to participate in the crucial examination without financial hindrance.

He stated that the WASSCE serves as a key academic milestone, opening doors to higher education and professional opportunities.

The CPS noted that by covering the registration fees annually, the state government is working to bridge socio-economic gaps and create a level playing field for students from diverse backgrounds.

According to the statement: “This effort not only reduces disparities but also fosters a more inclusive educational system that prioritises merit and potential over financial limitations.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to funding the WASSCE registration aligns with the Education, Human Capital Development, and Entrepreneurship objectives outlined in the ‘OUR-EASE’ policy of his administration.

“By investing in education, the government is laying the groundwork for a more skilled and competitive workforce, ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder the academic success of Ondo State’s future leaders.”
