Dr. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, has announced plans for a forensic audit of the mining sector to sanitize the industry and boost investor confidence.
The audit, he said, is part of ongoing reforms to enhance the regulatory framework and implement technology-driven mechanisms.
During a meeting with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Wednesday, Dr. Alake highlighted the importance of collaboration to harness the state’s vast solid mineral potential and address abandoned mining pits.
He emphasized the need for a forensic audit to monitor activities at mining sites and secure the mining environment.
The minister also discussed plans to create an Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Fund to remediate abandoned pits and convert them into productive uses like irrigation.
Governor Mutfwang commended Dr. Alake’s leadership and expressed optimism that the sector will contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP. He advocated for improved regulatory frameworks, up-to-date data, and federal support to address abandoned mining pits.
The minister’s announcement comes as part of efforts to revamp the mining sector and ensure sustainable development.
The forensic audit is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in the industry.
