Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected any political alliance or arrangement they believe could undermine the party’s candidates or President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.

The position was announced by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, after a closed-door meeting of APC governors at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

The development comes amid growing tension between the governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the cross-party political arrangement popularly known as the “Rainbow Coalition”, which Wike has been promoting in support of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid.

Uzodimma said the governors had unanimously resolved that none of them would participate in, support or endorse any political arrangement capable of weakening the APC or adversely affecting its candidates at any level.

“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.

He further clarified that the governors’ campaign structures would be dedicated exclusively to candidates contesting under the APC platform.

“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party,” he said.

Uzodimma added that the governors’ campaign commitment would be exclusively to APC candidates, with the party’s campaign structures at different levels aligned with the President’s expectations and the strategic objectives of the party.

The governors’ declaration comes against the backdrop of a growing political disagreement involving Wike and some APC governors, particularly Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has repeatedly maintained that his cross-party mobilisation is aimed at supporting Tinubu’s re-election.

He has, however, also made clear that supporting the President does not amount to an agreement that the PDP or other parties involved in the coalition should abandon their candidates in governorship, National Assembly or state assembly elections.

The FCT minister had previously accused Uzodimma and AbdulRazaq of working against his political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, while insisting that his priority remained securing support for Tinubu.

The latest declaration by the APC governors therefore draws a distinction between cross-party support for the President and support for candidates contesting under other political platforms against APC candidates.

The governors also indicated that their campaign strategy would focus on strengthening the APC’s structures from the national level down to the grassroots, with their respective states serving as key mobilisation points ahead of the 2027 elections.
