Ondo State Governor, Honourable Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has kicked off an ambitious plan to overhaul the State’s road infrastructure as part of his administration’s ‘OUR EASE’ mandate. Just weeks before his inauguration for a new term on February 24, 2025, the Governor approved the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and asphalt overlay of over 50 township roads across all 18 local government areas of the State.
The Governor has also released funds to mobilise contractors, ensuring the completion of ongoing projects initiated under the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa administration. Speaking on this monumental development, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Pastor Ayoade Babalola, emphasised the importance of robust road infrastructure in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents.
He highlighted the administration’s earlier success with contracts for 60km of road projects awarded in August 2024, noting that these efforts reflect the Governor’s extraordinary commitment to transforming the State’s transportation network. Babalola further explained that contractors for the newly approved projects have already been mobilised, with work progressing simultaneously on ongoing projects.
The 2025 budget allocates N433 billion—62.06% of the total expenditure—to capital projects, underscoring Governor Aiyedatiwa’s determination to make Ondo State an infrastructural hub. Roads in major towns such as Akure, Owo, Idanre, Okitipupa, and Igbokoda have been earmarked for rehabilitation, construction, or asphalt overlay. Work has already commenced on several roads, including Kajola Lane in Owo, Isolo-Akosile Road in Akure, and Ministry of Niger Delta Road in Igbokoda, with progress ranging from drainage construction to scarification and earthworks.
In addition to the approved projects, plans are underway to begin the dualisation of the Akure–Oke Aro–Idanre Road, the construction of the Agbaluku–Imo Road in Arigidi Akoko, and other strategic routes. The Direct Labour Engineering Unit of the Ministry of Works has also intensified efforts on the “Operation Zero Pothole” initiative, rehabilitating roads across the three senatorial districts of the State.
Projects completed through direct labour include Ishakunmi Road in Ikare, Sijuade Road in Akure, and Broad Street in Ode Aye, among others. The Ministry of Infrastructure is preparing for the second phase of this initiative to ensure a seamless travel experience across the State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s efforts demonstrate a clear vision to elevate Ondo State’s infrastructure, drive economic activities, and improve residents’ livelihoods. Residents can expect a transformative year as the Governor remains resolute in his commitment to fulfilling the promises of his ‘OUR EASE’ mandate.
