Ondo State is in mourning following the death of its first Military Administrator, Group Captain Ita David Ikpeme (rtd), CON, who passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has paid heartfelt tributes to the retired airforce officer, recognising his pivotal role in laying the foundation for the state’s development.
Ikpeme, then a Wing Commander, served as the first Governor of Ondo State following its creation from the old Western State during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo on 3rd February, 1976.
His death was formally communicated to the governor on Wednesday in a letter signed by Iquo Ikpeme on behalf of the family.
In his message of condolence, Governor Aiyedatiwa praised the late Ikpeme as a distinguished statesman, an exemplary administrator, and a devoted leader who left an indelible mark on Ondo State.
Reflecting on his tenure from 1976 to 1978, the governor highlighted Ikpeme’s critical contributions to the state’s progress and lauded his role as a pillar of his native community in Calabar, Cross River State.
The governor emphasised that Ikpeme’s legacy would continue to inspire the people of Ondo State, noting that his visionary leadership set the stage for the state’s development.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them of the government’s support in organising a befitting burial for the late pioneer leader.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also offered prayers for the repose of Ikpeme’s soul and comfort for his loved ones during this time of mourning.
