The announcement was made during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held in Akure on Wednesday.

Represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised that the initiative is part of his administration’s commitment to empowering the widows of fallen heroes and ensuring their financial self-reliance.

He remarked: “The Micro-Credit Loan Scheme to the widows of the departed heroes, which is at zero interest rate, remains a unique programme that will be sustained irrespective of the economic situation. The sum of ₦35 million has been approved this year to accommodate more beneficiaries than last year.”

He further appealed to recipients to prioritise repayment to ensure the scheme’s sustainability.

“While we assure you that we shall continue to make the loan more accessible, we equally appeal to the beneficiaries to join hands with the government by making repayment of the loan their top priority,” he added.

Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed that the interest-free loan disbursement would remain a key component of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations in the state.

He also highlighted that beneficiaries who fully repay their loans promptly would become eligible for higher loan amounts in the future, fostering a cycle of empowerment and economic growth.

In her remarks, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Deaconess Lola Fagbemi, commended the governor for his dedication to uplifting the widows of fallen heroes.

She noted that the state government had previously allocated resources to the emblem appeal fund, which also contributes to widows’ empowerment.

Retired Colonel Olu Apata, Chairman of the Ondo State Legion, expressed gratitude to the governor for his consistent support.

He urged beneficiaries to utilise the loans effectively and ensure timely repayment.

Amusa Alarape, the state coordinator of the Military Widows’ Association (MIWA), echoed these sentiments, stating that the loans would significantly bolster their businesses and improve their families’ wellbeing.

The ceremony concluded with a final parade and the laying of wreaths by the governor, military officers, and other dignitaries, including Major General John Lar, Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure.
