…Aiyedatiwa, Mimiko, Makinde, others to speak

The Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to host its highly anticipated 2024 Press Week, drawing a star-studded lineup of speakers, honourees, and dignitaries.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and former Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko will join other prominent figures for the weeklong event, which promises to celebrate media excellence while addressing critical societal issues.
Themed “Setting the Agenda Amidst Electioneering Paradox and Elusive Economic Development in Nigeria: The Media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm,” the event will feature a variety of activities starting on Sunday, 8th December, and culminating in a grand finale and awards night on Friday, 13th December.
According to a press statement issued in Akure by the organising committee’s Chairman, Omosileola Adesoye-Ajayi, and Secretary, Fidelis David, the celebrations will spotlight the media’s vital role in navigating Nigeria’s socio-political and economic challenges.
The Press Week will kick off with a Thanksgiving Service at Salvation Gospel International Centre in Akure.
Activities throughout the week include charity visits, free medical outreach for journalists and their spouses, a symposium, a health walk, a children’s party, indoor games, and entertainment nights.
The symposium, a highlight of the celebrations, will take place on Tuesday, 10th December.
Distinguished speakers include Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Dr Abass Mimiko, Barrister Olumuyiwa Adu, and Professor Olusegun Adegbulugbe.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, serving as the Grand Patron and Special Guest of Honour, will formally declare the Press Week open.
The event will be chaired by Hon Abiola Makinde, representing Ondo East/West Federal Constituency, with the NUJ National President, Comrade Yahya Alhassan, and Ondo State NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, acting as chief host and host, respectively.
Notable honourees at this year’s event include Professor Olusegun Adegbulugbe, a respected educationist and community leader; Engineer Margaret Oguntala, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers; and Comrade Ademola Odudu, Chairman of the Ondo State NURTW.
Others being recognised are Dr Seun Osamaye, Hon Chris Ayebusiwa, Mr Ayo Durodola, Mr Olumide Origunloye, and Dr Niyi Ijogun.
The Press Week’s Wednesday activities will feature a health walk led by Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami, followed by a children’s party and indoor games at the NUJ Press Centre.
On Thursday, a novelty football match will be held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, with the evening capped off by a Jazz/Asun Night.
The celebrations will conclude on Friday with a Jumat service at Akure Central Mosque, followed by the grand finale at the NUJ Press Centre in Alagbaka.
The finale will feature a dinner and an award ceremony, honouring individuals and organisations for their outstanding contributions to the state and the nation.
This year’s Press Week promises to be both enlightening and entertaining, bringing together media professionals, public figures, and the broader Ondo State community in a celebration of journalistic integrity and societal impact.
