No fewer than 24 persons have been confirmed dead following a canoe accident in Jigawa State.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Adiyani village in Guri Local Government Area of the state when a canoe conveying passengers capsized.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Dutse on Monday.
He said initial reports indicated that 16 persons died in the mishap, while 10 others were rescued alive and 14 were declared missing.
According to him, subsequent search and rescue operations led to the recovery of more bodies, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 24.
Shiisu added that efforts were ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident, while relevant authorities continued to monitor the situation.
The police urged residents in riverine communities to exercise caution, especially during water transportation, to prevent similar tragedies.
