President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, following her historic emergence as the first woman to lead the Asian nation.

In a personally signed letter dispatched to Tokyo and released by the Presidency on Thursday, President Tinubu described Prime Minister Takaichi’s parliamentary victory as a reflection of the confidence the Japanese people and the Liberal Democratic Party have placed in her leadership.

He praised her decades of committed service to governance in Japan, noting that her rise to the premiership symbolises both political accomplishment and progressive change.

“As you assume this mandate, you can please rest assured of Nigeria’s continued goodwill and support for Japan,” President Tinubu stated, highlighting the longstanding and strategic cooperation shared by both countries across various sectors of mutual interest.

The President expressed optimism that the Nigeria–Japan partnership would deepen further under Takaichi’s “capable and visionary leadership,” citing opportunities to expand productive engagements that benefit citizens of both nations.

Looking ahead, President Tinubu conveyed his desire to meet the new Prime Minister at the earliest suitable time to explore fresh areas of collaboration.

He concluded his message by extending his best wishes to Prime Minister Takaichi for her continued good health and personal well-being.

The statement was issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
