Prominent Nigerian leaders have called on the media to rise to the challenge of driving national development by setting a progressive agenda for policymakers.
Speaking at a symposium organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akure as part of the 2024 Ondo Council’s Press Week celebrations, they underscored the media’s critical role in nation-building and called for constitutional reforms, including the removal of the “state of origin” clause.
The event, themed “Setting the Agenda Amidst Electioneering Paradox and Elusive Economic Development in Nigeria: The Media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm,” brought together policymakers, legal experts, and journalists to discuss the media’s role in addressing Nigeria’s complex socio-economic and political challenges.
Opening the event, Ondo State NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite highlighted the struggles faced by media organisations in Nigeria due to the nation’s economic challenges.
He called on the federal and state governments to provide financial bailouts to ensure the survival of media houses.
“The poor economy has placed undue pressure on media organisations. Urgent intervention is needed to sustain their operations and ensure they continue to play their crucial role in society,” Adegbite stated.

Media as a Catalyst for Change
The Chairman of the symposium, Hon. (Dr.) Abiola Makinde, a federal lawmaker representing Ondo East/Ondo West constituency, highlighted the media’s unique power to shape public priorities.
He urged journalists to combat fake news and foster constructive engagement by spotlighting public officials who deliver on their mandates while exposing inefficiency.
“Journalists are the heartbeat of any nation. Use your investigative prowess not only to dismantle fake news but also to counter the ‘pull-down syndrome’ that undermines progress,” Makinde said.

Advocating True Federalism and Equity
APC stalwart Barrister Olumuyiwa Adu called for Nigeria’s restructuring along geographical lines to promote equity, justice, and security.
He stressed that true federalism would allow regions to develop based on their strengths. Adu also advocated replacing the “state of origin” clause in Nigeria’s constitution with a “state of residence” designation to foster unity and inclusiveness.
Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, represented by Barrister Kayode Taiwo, echoed this sentiment, adding that the media’s agenda-setting role is vital amidst Nigeria’s electoral and economic struggles.
“The media shapes public opinion and guides policymakers, but journalists must remain steadfast despite challenges such as harassment, arrests, and limited enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act,” Adegbonmire noted.

Media’s Role in Amplifying Marginalised Voices
Dr. Abass Mimiko, the ZLP gubernatorial candidate for the 2024 Ondo election, urged journalists to provide platforms for marginalised voices and drive constructive dialogue.
“The media must navigate the paradoxes of governance and economic stagnation by guiding policymakers and amplifying the concerns of the marginalised,” he said.
Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the media.
He urged journalists to adhere to ethical standards and resist the incursion of unqualified individuals into the profession.
He said: “Public interest journalism is a pillar of democracy. The pen must not be used to thwart national development.”

Honouring Excellence and Commitment
The event also celebrated notable contributions to peace and leadership.
Comrade Ademola Odudu, Chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), was honoured with an Award of Excellence as the Ondo State Peace Ambassador of the Year.
