President Tinubu swears in Justice Kekere-Ekun as substantive CJN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upholding the judiciary’s independence and sanctity.

Justice Kekere-Ekun, the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, took the oath of office on Monday, following her confirmation by the Senate.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including four former chief justices of the Federation, the President of the Court of Appeal, and other heads of the judiciary divisions.

President Tinubu emphasised the judiciary’s pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, noting its importance as the last hope of the common man.

He pledged to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary, ensuring its independence and non-interference from the government.

The President also commended Justice Kekere-Ekun’s rise as a testament to hard work and an inspiration to women, particularly young girls, in a male-dominated profession.

He acknowledged the presence of her 89-year-old mother and other family members, and thanked the Senate for expediting the confirmation of the new CJN.

According to him: “Justice Kekere-Ekun’s swearing-in ceremony marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s judiciary, cementing its reputation as a self-evolving and progressive institution.”

With her appointment, President Tinubu reiterated his government’s dedication to improving judicial officers’ welfare and working conditions, ensuring their effectiveness in administering justice.
