The Ondo State Government has launched the maiden edition of the O’datiwa Women Fitness and Health Awareness Outreach in Akure, an initiative jointly organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Declaring the event open, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, said the outreach was designed to empower women with knowledge of good nutrition, physical fitness, and healthy living.

She commended the large turnout, describing it as a testament to women’s commitment to wellness and personal growth.

Osamaye announced that the O’datiwa Women Fitness and Health Awareness Outreach would now hold every last Friday of the month, adding that the programme was part of the state government’s broader strategy to promote preventive healthcare and enhance the quality of life among women.

She praised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for prioritising women’s health, describing his administration as one that “walks the talk” in advancing gender inclusion and social welfare.

Also speaking, a nurse and member of the State Hospitals’ Management Board, Mrs Arinola Adamolekun, urged participants to maintain a balanced diet and engage in regular physical exercise.

She encouraged women to consume organic foods, fruits and vegetables, avoid processed meals, and adopt adequate rest, hydration, and stress management as vital components of healthy living.

The event featured a vibrant aerobics session led by certified fitness instructors, Coach Abimbola Oladimeji, Coach Ejibunnu Temitope Carolina, and Coach Okedola, who guided participants through stretching, cardio and strength-building routines suitable for women of all ages.

During the exercise session, Dr Osamaye reiterated that the outreach aligns with the state’s broader agenda to reduce untimely deaths among women, many of whom, she noted, often neglect their health due to family and work demands.

“This is not just an exercise programme; it is a movement to reclaim women’s vitality and promote healthy living,” she said.

Participants expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for his unwavering commitment to women’s welfare.

A trader and mother of three, Mrs Funmilayo Ojo, said, “For the first time, the government is bringing health to our doorstep. We feel seen and valued.”

Other dignitaries in attendance included Dr (Mrs) Ajibefun, Mrs Ajaka, Dr (Mrs) Jumoke Aborode, Amira Alhaja Rafat Omikunle (FOMWAN President), Alhaja Momoh, Mr Mefun Tophas (Director, Child Development), and Mr Olatunji Felix (Director, Accounts), alongside other women leaders and stakeholders.

The session ended with group photographs and light refreshments, as participants departed energised and motivated, pledging to return for the next edition and encourage more women to join.

The inaugural O’datiwa Women Fitness and Health Awareness Outreach has set a positive tone for a healthier and more empowered female population in Ondo State.
