In a strong display of commitment to child development and inclusive governance, the Ondo State Government, in partnership with Save the Children International, has held a two-day leadership workshop for members of the Children’s Parliament, with a special focus on including children with disabilities.

The workshop, hosted in Akure the state capital, brought together young parliamentarians, religious leaders, educational stakeholders, and children from diverse backgrounds including those living with disabilities to strengthen youth participation in state affairs.

Declaring the workshop open, Dr Seun Osamaye, Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, emphasised the state’s deliberate effort in nurturing a new generation of leaders.

“This initiative is part of the government’s intentional policy to build young leaders and promote child participation in governance. Through this workshop, our children will gain valuable insight into their roles as parliamentarians, while acquiring key leadership and advocacy skills,” Dr Osamaye stated.

She extended appreciation to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his steadfast support of child welfare policies, and commended Save the Children International for its active involvement in safeguarding children, particularly in cocoa-producing communities across the state.

“This collaboration is vital to our ongoing efforts to implement a robust child protection policy,” she added.

Echoing her sentiments, Save the Children’s Communication Officer, Ehinmofe Samuel, highlighted the organisation’s safeguarding work in Ondo and Rivers States.

According to him: “Our mission is to ensure that every child is safe, protected, and heard. We are grateful to the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs for their unwavering partnership in promoting the rights and well-being of children.”

The workshop’s lead speaker, Emmanuel Adaramola, delivered a compelling session on leadership and advocacy.

He urged the young parliamentarians to seize the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

“Ondo State is fortunate to have re-established the Children’s Parliament. It is a powerful platform for young voices, and I charge you all to use it wisely,” Adaramola said.

Participants included secondary school students, youth leaders, and representatives from religious and educational institutions.
