Ondo Assembly members pass Vote of No Confidence, move to remove Speaker Oladiji (Read the Resolution)

By Our Reporter

Twelve members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have passed a vote of no confidence in the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, and initiated his removal over allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety and violations of constitutional provisions.

The resolution, dated November 13, 2025, was issued pursuant to Section 92(4)(c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended), which empowers the House to remove a Speaker through a formal vote supported by a prescribed number of members.

According to the lawmakers, Oladiji is accused of diverting ₦50 million earmarked for a public hearing and misappropriating monthly operational grants of the Assembly.

The members allege that the actions constitute abuse of office and breach multiple sections of Nigerian law, including Paragraph 9 of Part I of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution relating to corruption and abuse of office, and the Oath of Office as contained in the Seventh Schedule.

The resolution also cites contraventions of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, particularly Section 19 on abuse of office, and Section 390 of the Criminal Code, which defines stealing by a public officer.

The lawmakers further assert that Oladiji’s alleged infractions amount to gross misconduct within the meaning of Section 188(11) of the Constitution, saying his actions have “gravely impaired the institutional integrity and lawful operations of the House.”

In addition to the vote of no confidence, the members called on the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to invite the Speaker for investigation and possible prosecution, as well as to facilitate the recovery of all funds purportedly misappropriated.

The resolution was signed by 12 lawmakers, including Hon. Jide Oguntodu (Akure South 1), Hon. Temitope Akomolafe (Ifedore), Hon. Fatai Atere (Akoko North-West 1), Hon. Toyin Japhet (Akoko North-East), Hon. Raymond Daodu (Akoko South-West 1), Hon. Samuel Ifabiyi (Odigbo 1), Hon. Babatunde Fasonu (Odigbo 2), Hon. Princess Oluwatosin Ogunlowo (Idanre), Hon. Afe Felix (Akoko North-West 2), Hon. Nelson Akinsuroju (Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo), Rt. Hon. Akinruntan Abayomi (Ilaje 1), and Hon. Stephen Abitogun (Akure South 2).

The development marks a major escalation in internal Assembly politics, with the signatories insisting that the integrity of the legislature must be upheld through accountability and adherence to constitutional norms.

Further reactions from the Speaker or other members of the House were yet to be obtained at the time of filing this report.
