Nigeria has recorded a significant diplomatic milestone as Senator and Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim has been elected Chairman of the United Nations Committee on Budget and Administration, popularly known as the Fifth Committee.

Ibrahim announced his election on June 2, 2026, describing it as a great honour and a historic achievement for Nigeria on the global stage.

In his acceptance remarks, the newly elected chairman expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and leadership, saying the reforms being implemented by the Nigerian government would serve as valuable lessons in his new international assignment.

“It is indeed an honour to be elected as the Chairman of Budget and Administration of the United Nations today, June 2, 2026,” Ibrahim stated.

He added that the principles underpinning the ongoing reforms of the Tinubu administration would be reflected in the management of the United Nations’ budgetary, appropriations and human resources processes.

The diplomat also thanked Nigerians for what he described as a historic accomplishment, noting that his emergence as chairman of the committee underscores the growing influence of Nigeria in international affairs.

Addressing representatives of the UN’s 193 member states, Ibrahim pledged to provide strategic leadership at a period marked by complex global challenges.

“I assured my colleagues from the 193 member states that at this challenging time in history, it is my responsibility to provide strategy in chaotic situations,” he said.

The Fifth Committee is one of the principal committees of the United Nations General Assembly and is responsible for administrative and budgetary matters, including oversight of the organisation’s finances, resource allocation and human resource policies.

Ibrahim’s election is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s visibility and participation in key global governance institutions.
