In a decisive move against illegal mining, the Mining Marshals have dismantled a well-fortified illegal mining operation in Rafin Gabas, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The site, which had long operated under the protection of compromised security personnel, was raided in a well-coordinated strike that led to the arrest of three foreign nationals involved in the illicit trade.

Several other suspects managed to evade capture, allegedly with assistance from security operatives.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, lauded the successful operation, describing it as a major breakthrough in the government’s ongoing crackdown on illegal mining.

He reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to purge the mining sector of criminal activities and ensure offenders face justice.

Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC John Attah Onoja, confirmed that the illegal site has been sealed off, and a manhunt is underway for the fleeing suspects.

He further revealed that the company behind the unlawful operation, along with some of the absconding individuals, already faces criminal charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He said the raid aligns with the government’s broader strategy to eliminate illegal mining and restore order to the sector.

During the first anniversary of the Mining Marshals, Dr Alake reiterated the ministry’s commitment to intensifying its enforcement efforts.

He also announced plans to enhance the operational capacity of the Marshals through satellite monitoring of mining sites and the deployment of advanced surveillance equipment.
