Kanu moved to Sokoto Prison after life sentence – Ex-lawyer raises concern

The Federal Government has transferred the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to a correctional facility in Sokoto State, his former lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has revealed.

Kanu was moved from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja less than 24 hours after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in the FCT, sentenced him to life imprisonment on multiple terrorism charges.

Ejimakor, in a post on X on Friday, confirmed the relocation and expressed concern that the move would further isolate Kanu from his legal representatives and family members.

“MAZI NNAMDI KANU has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers,” the lawyer wrote.

Kanu’s transfer comes after years of legal battles following his controversial arrest in Kenya and return to Nigeria in 2021.

His conviction, which includes charges linked to inciting violence through broadcasts, has sparked renewed debate over the government’s handling of separatist agitation in the South-East.
