The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
Democracy Day is observed annually in Nigeria to honour the struggles, sacrifices and resilience of Nigerians who played pivotal roles in the country’s journey towards democratic governance.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Federal Government described June 12 as a historic date that occupies a special place in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, symbolising the collective determination of citizens to uphold democratic principles and constitutional governance.
The government noted that the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians in the pursuit of democracy continue to shape the nation’s values and strengthen its institutions.
It stressed that the legacy of those who fought for democratic rule remains a guiding force in the country’s political and social development.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to democratic governance, the Minister stated that the Federal Government would continue to uphold the core principles of democracy, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
According to him, these principles remain fundamental to the nation’s progress and will continue to guide government policies and programmes aimed at deepening democratic culture and promoting national development.
The government also underscored the importance of security in sustaining democratic institutions, assuring citizens that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures across the country.
Tunji-Ojo stated that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of the Federal Government, adding that a peaceful and secure environment is essential for democratic growth, economic advancement and national stability.
He observed that the success of any democracy depends not only on the actions of government but also on the active participation and responsible conduct of citizens.
The Minister therefore called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey and the responsibilities that come with citizenship.
He urged citizens to remain committed to lawful conduct, national unity and constructive engagement in the democratic process.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister said.
The Federal Government expressed optimism that continued adherence to democratic values would further strengthen national cohesion, enhance good governance and accelerate the country’s development aspirations.
