Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, was on Thursday arrested by police officers in Abuja shortly after leaving the premises of the Federal High Court.

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, was reportedly accosted by a team of police operatives as he stepped out of the court complex.

Eyewitnesses said the officers informed him that his arrest was based on “orders from above.”

Despite objections from his lawyers and associates, Sowore was immediately whisked away by the security operatives to an undisclosed location.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the police authorities nor Sowore’s legal team had issued an official statement regarding the reasons for his arrest or his current whereabouts.

Sowore, a long-time critic of government policies and a pro-democracy campaigner, has been arrested multiple times in the past over his activism and calls for social and political reforms in Nigeria.
