Atiku Abubakar resigns from PDP

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to a long and eventful association with the party that spanned over two decades.

The resignation, which takes effect from July 14, 2025, was announced in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, and released on Monday, July 15.

Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, was a founding member of the PDP and had contested for the presidency multiple times under its platform.

While the statement confirming his departure was brief and did not give reasons for his decision, the move has already triggered speculation about his next political direction, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.

Although Atiku has previously left and returned to the PDP at various points in his career, this latest exit is seen by political observers as particularly significant, given the current shifts within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

The full details of his next steps remain unclear, but insiders suggest that consultations are ongoing, with talks of coalition-building and possible alignment with other political blocs gaining momentum.

With this development, the PDP is expected to enter a new phase of introspection, as the departure of one of its most prominent figures raises questions about unity, leadership, and electoral strategy moving forward.
