Bayelsa State witnessed a grand celebration over the weekend as prominent Nigerians gathered in Yenagoa to honour retired Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade, the state’s first Military Administrator (MILAD), on his 70th birthday.
The three-day festivities drew thousands of Bayelsans, who came out in large numbers to celebrate the man widely regarded as a key architect of the state’s development.

Bayelsa, created in 1996 under the administration of the late General Sani Abacha, was placed under Olubolade’s leadership in June 1997.
During his tenure, which lasted until July 1998, the Ipoti-Ekiti-born officer laid foundational structures for the state’s growth, leaving an indelible mark that successive administrations built upon.

His contributions to the development of the predominantly Ijaw-populated region were the focal point of the celebrations.
The celebrations commenced at the Exco Chamber of the Government House and continued at venues like the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Samson Siasia Sports Complex, and a thanksgiving church service.

Olubolade, accompanied by his wife, Mopelola, was adorned in vibrant Ijaw attire and became the centre of attention.
The event, meticulously organised by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, showcased an array of tributes, cultural displays, and athletic events.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, joined Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri and his wife, Dr. Gloria Diri, in extolling Olubolade’s legacy.
Other dignitaries included Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, former Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah, and royal figures like King Alfred Diete-Spiff and King Joshua Igbugburu. Military officers, politicians, cultural leaders, and Olubolade’s family also graced the occasion.
Jonathan hailed Olubolade as a visionary leader whose contributions to Bayelsa remain evident.

He expressed gratitude for Olubolade’s role in shaping the state and commended Governor Diri for maintaining peace and unity, fostering an environment conducive to growth.
Similarly, Diri described Olubolade as a disciplined and selfless leader, celebrating his milestone as an inspiration to many.
The celebrant, visibly moved by the outpouring of affection, expressed his profound love for Bayelsa, emphasising his enduring bond with the state and its people.

Recalling his tenure, Olubolade spoke fondly of working alongside Jonathan and other Bayelsans, lauding their commitment to development.
He urged Nigerians to eschew corruption and adopt selflessness for national progress.
The festivities also included a documentary highlighting Olubolade’s projects during his tenure, a football match, relay races, cultural performances, and choir ministrations.

Guests were treated to branded gifts, food, and drinks, while the venues were adorned with vibrant displays and photographs chronicling the celebrant’s life and achievements.
In his sermon, Apostle Zilly Aggrey spoke on the theme “While There Is Life”, encouraging hope and perseverance.

He offered prayers for the celebrant and attendees, marking a fitting close to the joyous occasion.
The standing ovation that greeted Olubolade’s response was a testament to the high regard in which he is held.
“Your presence at my 70th birthday celebration has made this moment unforgettable. I deeply appreciate your love, friendship, and support,” he stated.
