Chief Adewole Omodayo Atandeyi, a distinguished public servant and veteran journalist whose career significantly shaped government information management in Ondo State, is dead. He was 92.
The elder statesman passed on peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, according to a statement issued by Engr Babajide Omotayo Atandeyi, on behalf of the family.
Chief Atandeyi’s public service career dates back to the creation of Ondo State in 1976, when he was appointed Chief Press Secretary to the state’s first Military Governor, Ita David Ikpeme.
In that pioneering role, he was credited with bringing professionalism, clarity and strategic direction to the articulation of government policies and programmes.
Over the decades, he rose through the ranks of the civil service, serving as Director of Information Service in the Ondo State Ministry of Information and later attaining the position of Director General in the Ondo State Civil Service, the apex of his administrative career, before his retirement.
Beyond the civil service, Chief Atandeyi also served on the board of Sketch Press Limited, the newspaper arm of the Odua Group, where he functioned first as Director and subsequently as Chairman. His tenure was widely regarded as a period of stability and institutional strengthening.
Described by family members as a man of integrity, wisdom and unwavering commitment to public enlightenment, the late administrator was acknowledged as one of the foundational figures in the development of the state’s information service architecture.
He was remembered as a disciplined administrator, mentor and community leader whose influence extended beyond official duties.
A devout Anglican, he served the Church faithfully in various capacities and was deeply involved in community development initiatives within Akure and beyond.
Chief Atandeyi is survived by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements, the family said, will be announced in due course.
