A fire outbreak on Monday engulfed the old terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos State, a section of the airport currently undergoing renovation.
Details surrounding the incident were still sketchy as at the time of filing this report.
The affected facility forms part of the airport’s ageing infrastructure being upgraded in a bid to enhance passenger experience and modernise operations.
Confirming the development, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Henry Agbebire, said officials were on ground managing the situation.
“We are aware of the outbreak, and we are there right now. We will publish a statement right now,” Agbebire said.
He disclosed that the agency’s emergency response unit had been activated, adding: “Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to curtail the situation.”
Agbebire assured the public that no casualties had been recorded.
“No loss of lives has been recorded. Further updates will be provided,” he stated.
Passengers and other airport users were advised to remain calm as emergency responders worked to fully extinguish the fire and assess the extent of damage.
An official statement detailing the cause of the incident and the impact on airport operations is expected from the authority.
