Olusegun Awolowo Jr., grandson of the late Nigerian nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has died at the age of 62.

Awolowo, a lawyer and former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), passed away on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the family.

“With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather – Olusegun Awolowo,” the family said.

Describing him as “the world’s most phenomenal husband, father and grandfather,” the family noted that he lived with “vision, integrity, passion and unwavering commitment,” dedicating his life to the service of Nigeria.

“He loved his family. He loved his work. He loved his country. And he lived every day with purpose, humility, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him,” the statement added.

The family said they were “shattered” by the loss but grateful for his legacy.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has described Awolowo’s death as a personal loss.

In a condolence message issued in Abeokuta, Abiodun said he received the news with “utter disbelief,” noting that Awolowo was “a gentleman par excellence, a voice of courage, and a consummate public servant.”

According to the governor, the deceased was affable, intelligent, and easy-going—qualities that endeared him to many.

He recalled that despite being born two months after his father’s death, Awolowo rose above life’s early challenges to become “an icon in his own right.”

Abiodun highlighted Awolowo’s service as Special Assistant to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Secretary for Social Development, and later Secretary of Transport between 2007 and 2011, describing his public service record as “exemplary and unblemished.”

He added that Awolowo’s dedication to national development earned him election in July 2021 as President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) from ECOWAS member states.

“His earthly sojourn may have been brief, but it was hugely impactful,” the governor said, while praying for comfort for his wife, children, the Awolowo family and all who mourn him.

“May his gentle soul rest in sweet repose,” he added.
