President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose influence transcends Nigeria and the African continent.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President rejoiced with Obasanjo, acknowledging his towering contributions to national development and continental affairs.
Tinubu noted Obasanjo’s record of service to the country, first as military Head of State between 1976 and 1979, when he handed over power to a civilian administration, and later as Nigeria’s first civilian president in the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.
The President also highlighted Obasanjo’s role in leading troops during the civil war to preserve Nigeria’s unity, his imprisonment for opposing military rule, and his sustained advocacy for Africa’s political and economic interests.
As the former leader marks his 89th birthday on March 5, Tinubu commended his intellectual contributions through books and public interventions, which he said reflect deep patriotism and commitment to nation-building.
The President prayed for continued good health, strength and wisdom for Obasanjo as he remains engaged in service to the nation and humanity.
