President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Ogun State Governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing his life and career as a model of excellence across engineering, business and politics.

The President’s message was delivered by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, at a commemorative event held at the Yar’Adua Centre on Wednesday.

The ceremony also featured the unveiling of four books authored by the celebrant: Daniel in the Lions’ Den, My March through the Courts, Path to Justice, and Otunba Gbenga Daniel in the Eyes of Time.

Describing Daniel, popularly known as OGD, as a “longtime ally and friend,” President Tinubu said his rise to prominence was anchored on hard work, resilience, wisdom and courage.

“I salute Otunba Daniel for his professional exploits, governance strides and political achievements. He accomplished these feats by dint of hard work, tenacity, wisdom, and courage,” the President stated.

Highlighting Daniel’s transition from the private sector to public service, Tinubu pointed to the founding of Kresta Laurel in 1990 as a testament to his entrepreneurial acumen.

He noted that the company has grown into a major player in Nigeria’s electro-mechanical engineering sector, particularly in elevator installation and maintenance.

“The enviable heights the company has attained should not be surprising given Otunba’s business acumen, hunger for success and determination,” he added.

Tinubu observed that Daniel successfully replicated his private sector achievements in governance following his election as Ogun State governor in 2003.

He credited his administration with prioritising industrialisation, public-private partnerships, education and infrastructure development.

Among his enduring legacies, the President cited the initiation of the state’s first agro-allied cargo airport and the establishment of Tai Solarin University of Education.

He further acknowledged Daniel’s continued service as Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District since 2023.

Recalling their longstanding political relationship, Tinubu noted that Daniel played a key role in his own political journey, particularly during the 1999 Lagos governorship election, working alongside the Heritage Group of Yoruba professionals to ensure victory and a smooth transition.

The President also commended Daniel’s ideological consistency, describing him as a committed progressive and “true Afenifere,” while welcoming his return to the progressive fold as a prominent leader within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“As Otunba clocks 70, I thank him… for his service to Ogun State and Nigeria, and his commitment to the socio-political and economic development of our country,” Tinubu said, wishing him continued good health and greater accomplishments.

The high-profile event drew a distinguished audience, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers and other eminent Nigerians.
