President Bola Tinubu on Friday reaffirmed his belief in the role of a credible opposition in a democratic system, stating that healthy competition and constructive engagement remain essential for good governance.

Tinubu made the remarks at the Eighth National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at Eagle Square in Abuja, where party leaders and delegates gathered to chart a new course for the ruling party.

“Let me reiterate, we do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition,” the President said.

“As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition that can challenge, question and help refine policies.”

He noted that such engagement was critical to improving governance, strengthening statecraft and advancing national development.

Describing the convention as a defining moment in the party’s history, Tinubu said it offered an opportunity to renew commitment to the APC’s founding ideals and national objectives.

“This convention is not merely a gathering; it is a defining chapter in the story of our democracy and our party,” he said.

The President stressed that the APC was established not merely as a platform for electoral victories, but as a vehicle for national transformation.

“It was founded as a home for those committed to building a Nigeria where governance works, institutions function and opportunities abound for all citizens,” he added.

Tinubu identified unity as the party’s greatest strength, warning against divisions driven by personal ambition and internal conflicts.

“Our greatest strength has never been in our size, but in our unity. We must guard against ego overriding ideology,” he cautioned.

He urged party members to remain disciplined and focused, noting that internal cohesion is critical to sustaining political relevance and success.

The President also called on delegates, aspirants and stakeholders to conduct themselves with integrity and mutual respect throughout the convention proceedings.

Paying tribute to the party’s founding members and late leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu urged members to uphold their vision and sacrifices.

On governance, the President said his administration remained committed to delivering reforms despite global economic challenges and domestic pressures.

He highlighted progress in infrastructure development, tax reforms, social investment programmes and efforts to strengthen national security.

“The sacrifices we are making today are laying the foundation for a more prosperous Nigeria tomorrow,” he said.

Tinubu pointed to improvements in key economic indicators, including declining inflation, rising investor confidence and sustained economic growth, adding that reforms in the oil and gas sector had begun to attract renewed foreign investment.

He, however, acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly in electricity supply and legacy debts within the power sector.

According to him, the proposed establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) would enhance transmission capacity and improve power supply across the country.

Addressing youths and women, the President called for increased participation in politics and governance.

“To the youth, you are not just the future but the hope of this nation. We must open more doors for your participation,” he said, while also emphasising the importance of women’s inclusion in political leadership.

Tinubu commended the Convention Planning Committee and party leaders for organising what he described as a successful event, and charged newly elected officials to lead with integrity, fairness and commitment to democratic values.

“The future of our party and Nigeria’s democracy depends on your leadership. Lead with courage, integrity and vision,” he said.
