The presidency announced on Tuesday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General with immediate effect.

Egbetokun was said to have tendered his resignation citing pressing family considerations, prompting President Tinubu to formally receive his letter on Monday.

In a statement announcing the development and signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, noting his professionalism, dedication and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture.

Egbetokun was appointed IGP in June 2023 for a four-year term scheduled to run until June 2027, under the amended provisions of the Police Act.

In view of ongoing security challenges across the country and in accordance with extant laws, President Tinubu approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General in order to provide steady and focused leadership for the force during this critical period.

The President said Disu’s experience, operational depth and demonstrated leadership capacity will be vital in guiding the police forward.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General.

If endorsed by the council, his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
