Bayelsa gets new Deputy Governor

Pastor Peter Pereotubo Akpe has been confirmed as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State following his approval by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Akpe was nominated by Governor Douye Diri, who had forwarded his name to the legislature after months of speculation over who would succeed the late Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died on December 11, 2025.

The confirmation brings to a close a period of uncertainty in the state’s executive arm and signals a new phase in the administration’s leadership structure.

Akpe, who until his nomination served as Chief of Staff at the Government House, previously held office as Majority Leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.

A native of Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area, Akpe hails from the same locality as his predecessor, maintaining the established political balancing within the area.

His elevation is widely seen as a strategic choice, given his familiarity with the workings of government and legislative processes.

Observers note that his combined experience in legislative leadership and executive administration positions him to play a stabilising role in the state’s governance architecture.

With his confirmation, attention now turns to his swearing-in and the responsibilities he will assume as deputy to Governor Diri in steering the affairs of Bayelsa State.
