In a remarkable gesture of justice and compassion, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has granted clemency to 43 prisoners as part of his inauguration day initiatives.
Acting on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, the governor’s decision underscores his commitment to reformative justice and humane governance.
The governor ordered the outright release of eight inmates, while 15 condemned prisoners who were sentenced to death by hanging have had their sentences commuted to various prison terms.
Additionally, 20 convicts serving life sentences have had their punishments reduced to more lenient terms.
Dr Ajulo described the decision as a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the power of rehabilitation.
“This decision is a reflection of His Excellency’s commitment to ensuring that our justice system embodies both mercy and humanity. It is also in line with his broader efforts to address challenges within the penal system and promote the reintegration of individuals into society as productive members,” he stated.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s act of clemency marks a significant step towards prison reform in Ondo State, reinforcing his administration’s focus on justice, fairness, and social reintegration.
