Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has disassociated himself from the legal proceedings against Barrister Wale Omolegbon, who is facing prosecution for alleged cyberbullying over his Facebook criticisms of the governor.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the governor made it clear that he had no involvement in the petition that led to Omolegbon’s ordeal and had never authorised anyone to take legal action against any citizen for criticising him or his administration.
Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles, stating that he had long accepted the challenges and scrutiny that come with serving the people.
He noted that he had been subjected to various forms of criticism in the past and had never reacted negatively or attempted to silence dissenting voices.
He emphasised that he welcomes diverse opinions as part of a thriving democracy and has no intention of using state power to suppress free speech.
To further demonstrate his stance, the governor has directed the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to take over the case against Omolegbon and work towards dropping all charges.
This move, according to the statement, underscores his belief in tolerance, open dialogue, and the right of citizens to express their views without fear of persecution.
Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated that he does not need anyone to fight his battles for him, urging his supporters and government officials to respect the principles of democracy.
He stated that his decision to intervene in the case reflects his administration’s commitment to upholding freedom of speech while maintaining a responsible civic environment in Ondo State.
